Stone Barns - Stewart Indian School
Stone Barns ~ Stewart Indian School
Carson City ~ Northwest Nevada
Listed on the National Registrar of Historical Places the school opened in 1890 and many of the stone buildings were built by Hopi stone masons using uniquely colored stones from Nevada rock quarries. In the 1940’s these stone barns were used for agriculture and ranching as well as to train and educate the local children from the Washoe, Paiute and Shoshone tribes that were boarding at the school.
The Nevada weather can be harsh; the barn roofs are showing their age and the dessert will always allow sage brush to move back into its native soil. While the stone barns remain silent for now, they still appear as magnificent as first built in this rugged environment.
